Ribbon Cutting & Sprat Class Today
Monday, May 23 at 4 PM
LAS VEGAS, NV (May 23, 2016)Sprat Artistic Ensemble, a New York City based multi-generational ensemble under the direction of Ryan Elisabeth Reid, is partnering with Core Academy and Coordinated Living of Southern Nevada for Sprat Classes that spawn art and theatre collaboration between local students and seniors. After securing an Outside Agency Grant from Clark County, the Sprat classes – which finished a six month pilot in February – are re-launching with even more opportunities for learning and engagement.
Sprat classes will take place multiple times every month at various senior communities connected with Ovation Property Management. Core Academy students participate in the Sprat classes alongside local seniors to express memories and thoughts from their lives in creative and therapeutic ways. Some of the seniors are high functioning while others have memory impairment. The subject of memory is a key component of every Sprat class and a cornerstone of Reid’s work.
Reid, who is originally from Las Vegas, launched Sprat with the premiere of her highly acclaimed original production Henri at The Smith Center in October 2014. In collaboration with the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health, Henri highlighted the beauty and complexity of Alzheimer’s and aging. The intimate theatre experience recently received recognition from the New York Times.
The original cast and crew members of Henri travel from New York to Las Vegas every month to teach Sprat classes. From storytelling and painting to playwriting and collage, Reid and her troupe of interdisciplinary and intergenerational artists have created a deeply meaningful curriculum that has profound effects on the teens and seniors who participate.
Sprat classes for this season will run from May 2016 – May 2017, culiminating in a final exhibition in June 2017 featuring the art and performances of participating teens and seniors.
